Search 100 million free photos, drawings and videos from Wikimedia Commons in a Google Sheet. Every result shows its license and credit line

Free Image Finder
Free images for commercial use, searched from a Google Sheet. Runs on the free Wikimedia Commons API.
“Can I actually use this picture?” Free Image Finder answers that on every row.
Type what you need on the Search tab and a gallery of free pictures fills in below. Every one comes from Wikimedia Commons, so every one is free to use, including for business. The sheet tells you the license and whether you need to give credit, and it writes the credit line for you.
Tick Save on the ones you like. The Export tab turns your Collection into a list of file URLs and a script that downloads them all to one folder. No app, no browser extension.
Benefits
  • Know you can use it. Every result shows its license, whether credit is needed, and a ready credit line.
  • No credit at all, if you want. Set License to “Public domain & CC0”.
  • Real things, not stock and not AI. The real Eiffel Tower, real wildlife, real NASA launches, old maps and museum paintings.
  • Download them all at once.One script saves every file you picked into a folder (Mac or Linux; on Windows, paste the URL list into any bulk downloader)
  • Free B-roll too. Switch Media type to Videos.
  • Free forever. The sheet is free, and the API needs no key and no sign-up.
Features
  • A Search tab with a gallery of up to 30 pictures and a Save checkbox on each picture.
  • Filters for:
    • media type: photos, drawings & SVG, GIFs, videos, audio, PDFs & books;
    • license;
    • quality: quality images or featured pictures;
    • sort;
    • minimum width;
    • number of results.
  • Three ways to search: by words, by Commons category, or near a place (coordinates from Google Maps).
  • A Results tab with title, type, width, height, size, length, license, credit needed, author, description, upload date, thumbnail, file URL, page URL and credit line.
  • A Collection tab of everything you saved, with previews.
  • An Export tab with file URLs, a download script, credit lines, HTML credits for a website, and thumbnail URLs.
  • Picture of the day for any date.
  • File lookup: paste any Commons file name or link and get its license, author and full-size URL.
  • Formulas you can reuse in any cell: =COMMONS(), COMMONSCATEGORY, COMMONSNEAR, COMMONSFILE, COMMONSPOTD.

    How to start
    1. Make your copy.
    2. Click 🖼️ Free Image Finder > Quick setup and allow access. It uses your email as the contact Wikimedia asks every script for.
    3. If Sheets shows “Allow access” above the pictures, click it so the images load.
    4. Type what you’re looking for in the yellow Search cell.

  • Files come from Wikimedia Commons through its public API. Better Sheets isn’t affiliated with the Wikimedia Foundation. Check each file’s license before you use it; the sheet shows what Commons lists.
