What is define name in Google Sheets?

A defined name is a readable label for a cell or range, like TaxRate instead of Sheet1!$B$1. Named ranges make formulas easier to audit and show up in the named ranges side panel.

When to use it

Use define name when writing or auditing formulas that must point at the right cells after copy, fill, or sheet changes.

When to skip it

Skip worrying about define name when a named range, QUERY, or pivot already expresses the logic more clearly.
