What is serial number in Google Sheets?

Serial Number is how Google Sheets stores or interprets values in cells: numbers, text, dates, booleans, and locale-specific separators. Format and locale settings change what you see without always changing the stored value.

When to use it

Use format and type knowledge when imports look like text, dates shift by a day, or decimals use the wrong separator.

When to skip it

Skip custom format rabbit holes when plain number or date formats already display correctly for your audience.
