I Built a Flashcard System in Google Sheets

In this video, learn how to create a simple flashcard system in Google Sheets that allows you to study efficiently by revealing answers with checkboxes. This system is perfect for students in various fields, making study sessions more interactive and organized.

So I wanna make a little flashcard system. This means we have a front of the card and a back of the card, like an explanation. We wanna define these, and we wanna learn these and study these, and I want this system to be usable in this spreadsheet so I don't have to print these out onto an index card. I can go in and I can study these. Could be for doctors, could be for studying, any kind of students, any kind of med students or law students, anyone who's studying a lot of stuff. And you have a front of the card and a back of the card. All right, so what I wanna do is first insert a few, uh, check boxes. So we'll insert check boxes over here. And what this is gonna do is we're gonna insert two things. We're gonna have a reveal, which means that this back is going to be hidden , and when we click Reveal, it'll be shown. Then when we click Done, we want the entire row to sort Better Sheets Videos Checklist Create a ChatGPT Cheat Sheet Spreadsheet

of fade away a little bit. So this is really great for if you want to come back and study the things you haven't really done yet. Um, you can not click Done, and it'll stay the same, or you can click Done and you're like, "Okay, I, I know this," but it won't hide it completely. That's the point. It'll just make it easier to see the other ones. Okay, let's do this. Inside of the B, we're going to actually move a whole other column here. We're gonna have this back somewhere else That could be over here on the right, maybe separated by a few, a few columns. Let's move it to H for the purposes of this video. I'm gonna move it right off screen And now in this B2 column, I'm gonna do equals IF. The equals IF is going to be based on the D column or D2 And now checkboxes are either true or false. If they are checked, they are true. If they are unchecked, they're false. And we can see here in our logical expression that we have an if formula , and then we have s- value of true, value of false. So if the value is true, we wanna reveal it. So we will say H2. And if it's false, we won't show anything. And now I could copy and paste all the way down, but I already have my front here. 5 Ways to use IF() Formula to Create Magic in Your Sheets 5 Magical Ways To Use the IF() Formula in Google Sheets How to Hide Text Until Checkbox Checked

And actually, let's check it. See? It works. Boom, boom. It works just to reveal it. I'm gonna double-click here And now, after I double-click that, I didn't have to copy paste. All of these are now filled in. You can see this. Isn't that cool? All right. So now for the done, we're gonna create a little bit of a conditional formatting that basically says, "Okay, we fi- we figured this out. We just want it a little subdued." So I'm gonna take A, C, and D, all of them. I'm gonna go up to Format , Conditional formatting . Again, I have A through D. I'm gonna format the cells . Custom formula is Wield Wizardry The Simplest Bestest Checklist in Google Sheets IF All Above Are Filled Conditional Formatting

And in the value or formula , I'm gonna go equals C1 equals TRUE. And then I'm gonna put a dollar sign in front of the C. Why do I do that? Is because all columns A, B, C, and D are now going to look at the C column. The background I'm gonna have as gray still, and the text I'm gonna have as, um, one more up. There we go So it is a little subdued once I click Done. So let's click Done here. Let's close this and test it. If I click Done, it subdues it a little bit. I can click Reveal. Yes, that is… Sum is gonna add up all of the, uh, the range inside of it. Is that correct? Function that adds up all the numbers in a specified range . Yep. Okay, I'm done with that. So that's pretty cool. Really simple flashcard system to say, "Okay, let's reveal what we have." Okay. Reveal this. I wanna do one more step because I think it would be really cool to be able to either see the back or the front at the same… at different times. So this reveal is actually reveal back. So I can add here Reveal Front, and I'm gonna have the exact same, uh, check boxes. Again, I'm going to take this column and move it over here to the G column. Okay. Let's move it over here to the G column Add front here. Give it a little bit more room And I'm gonna do the exact same thing I did here, except equals IF. The logical expression is going to be Reveal Front, this E cell, comma Value if True is G2, and comma if False is nothing. Actually, so I want to reveal all of these. I'm hitting… I'm selecting them all and hitting Space Bar to s- to check all of them at the same time. And now I am gonna Command+C, Shift+Command+Down, Command+V. See? So just a, another quick little way to copy and paste the whole column . And now I can do a reverse. See? So I can say this, see the back of all of them and not the front. So now I can say, "Okay, what is this definition?" Pretty cool, right? Oh, yeah, I'm done with those. Subdue it a little bit or hide it completely if you want, or reveal all of them, everything all at once. Pretty cool flashcard system. Very simple to set up. I hope you enjoyed it.
