Google sorts every API (a SKU) into three levels. The level sets how many requests you get free every month, per billing account.

The old $200 monthly credit is gone. Google replaced it on March 1, 2025 with these per-API caps, so two APIs no longer eat into one shared allowance.

What a list of every business in a city costs
This is the question we get most. One Text Search request returns up to 20 businesses, so Google Maps never shows you a whole city at once. You have to search it neighbourhood by neighbourhood. Ask for phone numbers, websites and ratings and each request is Text Search Enterprise.
Our test run for every coffee shop in Dallas took 110 searches and found 795 shops. Cost: $0, because it fits inside the 1,000 free requests. You could search about nine cities that size every month before paying a cent. Go past it and a whole big city is a few dollars.

- Set a quota on each API. In Google Cloud, open the API, then Quotas, and set requests per day. When it's hit, requests stop instead of billing you.
- Add a budget alert. Billing → Budgets & alerts. Set it to $1 and you'll hear about any charge at all.
- Ask for fewer fields. With the Places API (New), the fields you request decide the SKU. IDs only is free; ratings and phone numbers make it Enterprise.
- Restrict your key. Limit it to the APIs you use so a leaked key can't run up anything else.
- Cache results. Save what you've fetched in a sheet or database instead of asking Google again.

FAQ
How much does the Google Maps API cost?
Each Google Maps API (Google calls them SKUs) has a free monthly cap, then a price per 1,000 requests. Essentials SKUs are free for 10,000 a month, Pro for 5,000, Enterprise for 1,000. After that, prices run from $2 to $40 per 1,000 and drop as your volume grows. Use the calculator above for your exact bill.
Is the Google Maps API free?
For small projects, yes. Every SKU has a free monthly cap: 10,000 requests for Essentials, 5,000 for Pro and 1,000 for Enterprise. A few SKUs are free with no cap, like Maps Embed and the IDs-only Places calls. You still need a billing account to create a key.
What happened to the $200 monthly credit?
Google replaced it on March 1, 2025. Instead of one $200 credit shared across everything, each SKU now has its own free monthly cap. For most small projects that works out about the same or better.
How much does the Google Places API cost?
It depends on the fields you ask for. Text Search returning IDs only is free. Asking for phone numbers, websites, ratings or opening hours makes it Text Search Enterprise: 1,000 free a month, then $35 per 1,000. Basic fields like name and address count as Text Search Pro: 5,000 free, then $32 per 1,000.
How much is a Google Maps API key?
Nothing. The key is free to create in Google Cloud. You only pay for requests past the free caps.
How do I avoid a surprise bill?
Set a quota on each API in Google Cloud so it simply stops at your limit, add a budget alert to the billing account, and restrict the key to the APIs you use. With the Places API (New), ask only for the fields you need, because the fields decide the price.
