Some plans don't fit in one year. A three-year lease, a degree, a business plan your bank wants, a savings goal for a house. You need to see 2027, 2028 and 2029 together, and most calendars stop at December.
This post shows how to build a 3 year calendar in Google Sheets that covers 2027 to 2029 in one tab, driven by a single year cell, with the 2028 leap day handled for you. Then it shows where a one-year calendar like Big Year fits alongside it.
TL;DR
- A 3 year calendar in Sheets is 36 month rows by 31 day columns, all calculated from one starting year.
- 2028 is a leap year, so February 2028 needs 29 days while February 2027 and 2029 have 28.
- The most common mistake is typing dates by hand, which breaks the moment you shift the start year.
Who this is for
- Small Business Owner: lays out a three-year plan with launches, loan payments and hiring dates on one tab.
- Property Manager: tracks lease starts, renewals and end dates that run across several years.
- Academic Advisor: maps a student's three-year program, semester by semester, on one page.
- Financial Planner: shows a client when savings milestones land between now and the end of 2029.
- Product Manager: sketches a three-year roadmap where quarters and releases are visible at once.
What 2027, 2028 and 2029 look like
- 2027: starts Friday, January 1, ends Friday, December 31. 365 days, 261 weekdays.
- 2028: a leap year. Starts Saturday, January 1, ends Sunday, December 31. 366 days, 260 weekdays. February 29, 2028 is a Tuesday.
- 2029: starts Monday, January 1, ends Monday, December 31. 365 days, 261 weekdays.
That's 1,096 days in all. The leap day is the detail that trips up hand-built calendars, so the build below calculates every month length instead of assuming one.
Step 1: Set up 36 month rows
- In A1, type
2027. This is the first of your three years. - In B2, type
=SEQUENCE(1,31)to put the day numbers 1 to 31 across the top. - In A3, type
=EDATE(DATE($A$1,1,1),ROW()-3)and drag it down to A38. Each row is the first day of the next month, 36 months in total. - Format A3:A38 with a custom date format of
mmm yyyyso each row reads like Jan 2027 or Feb 2028.
The cells from B3 to AF38 stay empty for your notes.
Step 2: Shade weekends and gray out missing days
Select B3:AF38 and add two conditional formatting rules with "Custom formula is":
-
Missing days (dark gray):
=B$2>DAY(EOMONTH($A3,0)). This grays out February 29 to 31 in 2027 and 2029, but only February 30 and 31 in 2028. -
Weekends (light fill):
=WEEKDAY($A3+B$2-1,2)>5.
Keep the gray rule first. To check it, look at the Feb 2028 row: box 29 should be white, and it should fall on a Tuesday.
Step 3: Make the years easy to tell apart
Thirty-six rows of months blur together. Add a thick border under each December row (rows 14 and 26), or give each year a different light fill in column A. Freeze row 2 and column A (View, Freeze) so the day numbers and month names stay put while you scroll. To print, use landscape with Fit to width; each year fits on its own page if you set print ranges of 12 rows.
Where Big Year fits
A 3 year strip is good for the long view and bad for detail. Each box is tiny. For the year you're in, I'd keep a proper one-page calendar next to it.
Big Year 2027 is free in Google Sheets. The BIG tab shows all 12 months on one page with weekends lightly highlighted, and holidays you add in SETTINGS highlight automatically. The DOWNLOAD tab gives you a one-page PDF in Letter, A4, Tabloid or A3, plus an Excel (.xlsx) file. Big Year is updated every year, and the page says a 2028 version is coming. Use the 3 year tab for milestones and Big Year for this year's weeks.
Start by putting in the end date of your longest commitment, like the last month of a lease, then work backwards to today.
Common pitfalls
- Hand-typed dates. They don't move when you change the start year. Build every date from A1 with formulas.
- Forgetting the leap day. A copied February row gives 2028 only 28 days. The EOMONTH rule handles it.
- Too much detail. Weekly tasks don't belong on a three-year view. Keep it to milestones and deadlines.
- No year markers. Without borders or fills, you'll write a 2028 date in a 2027 row. Mark each December.
