% to Divide by 100
Discover how to effectively use the percentage symbol in Google Sheets to divide numbers by 100 and 1,000, along with unique applications like generating sequences with percentages.
There's a little known thing about the percentage symbol. It's that you can use it to divide by 100. So, we want this text 38,848. And you usually go, "Hey, do this divide by 100." And cool, it's a number . It's this number without the percentage sign. But what if we don't want to do divide by 100? There's another way. And there usually is another way to do exactly the same thing. We'll take this number and we'll just add percentage at the end. And you'll see right away in this cell we get 388.48. We hit enter. Now your format might be plain text or I would prefer automatic in this particular case. And we can also do this to divide by 1,000. I'm going to
show you how to do that. So we just take B before add a percentage sign. And you think, oh, just add another percentage sign. But that won't work. we need to add parentheses around it. So we'll do first percent, we'll wrap it with parentheses, and then do another percent. And this divides it by a th00and. But that's not the only way to get just really cool numbers. Here you want a list of 01, 02, 03. We can do array formula sequence and we're going to say we want three numbers. We want 0.12 03 in parenthesis and we just add the percentage symbol. Look, that is a pretty unique way to use the percent symbol with this sequence of three,
which is saying start 1 2 3 4. It's just giving you the numbers 1 2 3 4 all the way down as many as you want. Maybe you want 10. There's all of them up to 10 or you want a hundred. There's 100 numbers and each of them is divided by a not a th00and but 100. That's pretty cool, right? You can also take this entire range , add percent. And there you go. Everything is divided by 100 just with this one formula array formula . Here's the range . And add percent. The percent symbol just divides by 100. Isn't that cool?
