How to Merge Cells Horizontally

You're going to learn how to merge cells horizontally in this video. If you have a situation where you have a first name and a last name, but the header you want to just say full name instead of one header that says first name and one header that says last name, you'll want to merge your cells horizontally. Here we'll select first and last, both of these cells. We can click these merged cells, but we can also click next to it, the down arrow, select merge type, and we can select merge horizontally. It'll give us a heads up that the merging of the cells will only preserve the top left most value. Do you want to merge anyway? Click OK and it will merge. There's another way to do this. We can select two scores here. Maybe we're keeping track of team one score and team two score and we need just the header to say team score instead of team one score and team two score.
We can go up to format and merge cells . One of these options, not Merge All , but the option is Merge Horizontally . We can preserve the top leftmost value again. Okay. There you go. There is another reason why we might want to merge cells horizontally. In this first case, it was to just simplify the header . In this case, however, it is aesthetic reasons. If we want a vertical line above a cell, we're going to have to merge two cells and then either add a border or add some coloring above or below that to have that vertical line. In the case on the right side here, I have something that looks sort of like an organizational chart or a flowchart, great for mapping out workflow. You have a cell, a line, and then A cell and then a line and then
a cell to have these connected. How I've done this is just adding borders, but also merging horizontally these three cells . You can also select any number of rows, select the merge type, merge horizontally , and it will merge horizontally each and every row. It won't merge everything all together.
