How to Highlight Not Time
Learn how to highlight cells in Google Sheets that do not contain time values using conditional formatting. This tutorial walks you through the steps to create a custom formula for effective data visualization.
Okay, I thought this would be super easy. I just wanted to have a column where all of the items in it are as a time, but if there's not a time, I want it to highlight. And I thought this would be super easy, but it's not, and I can't believe how difficult it is, but I'm gonna show you how to do this. Basically, look, you can put in five or how, and it's highlighted, but a time is not. So if it's six PM for my fourth coffee of the day, then it's not going to highlight. It'll only highlight the things that are not time because maybe we're gonna insert some text here, and we wanna just see, like, edit this, right? Okay. What we need to do is you can see over here on the right, it's conditional format . If we have this closed, we can select the whole B column, go up Anders Asks: Can I Highlight Whole Row if Certain Columns have text? to Format , Conditional formatting . And this is the whole thing here, but I'm gonna go through this item by item. First, we're going to say Time value. And make sure your range is… Here it says B2 to B1000, but you can do B to B. And I like to, however, skip the header row , so I do like to do B2. That's gonna be important because in this value, time value, we're gonna do B2. And right away, you can see over here on the left that what this does is it just highlights the times. But I don't want to highlight the times. I wanna highlight where it's not the time. And I can do not, right? Hmm. This is gonna be, like, five. But look, this is not correct. Five is not correct. Five is not a thing. Rishabh Asks: Conditional Format Whole Row Via Text inside a Cell The Simplest Bestest Checklist in Google Sheets How to Highlight Today Only in Conditional Formatting
Five, um, five. See, it, it's-- it-- the not is not correct. So we're not gonna use not So we're gonna wrap this with IFERROR . So IFERROR , then parentheses, and then we're going to do comma zero. And then we're gonna say equals zero. I'm gonna put an end parentheses here now. It's gonna error it out, but I'm gonna go back to the beginning. I'm gonna say AND. Now we're wrapping it with AND. And I'm gonna say B2, and this is, uh, sort of this angle bracket, angle bracket. I'm gonna do two quotes, then a comma. What this is saying is if it's blank Then we're gonna also be zero. So now if I put five, it's there. 5 Ways to use IF() Formula to Create Magic in Your Sheets 5 Magical Ways To Use the IF() Formula in Google Sheets IF All Above Are Filled Conditional Formatting
If I put six, it's there. It's highlighting the correct things that are not times, but they're also not blank. So this whole thing is equals and parentheses B2 angle bracket, angle bracket, two quotes to say, it's not blank. Then comma IFERROR parentheses time value, and then in time value is B2. If you want to do the entire B column, we need to change this to B1. That's the only change But we're gonna do B2 here and B2 So time value B2, end parentheses, then comma zero, then end parentheses equals zero, and then end parentheses. And you can change the conditional formatting here, like if it's green or something else like that. 5 Ways to use IF() Formula to Create Magic in Your Sheets Unlock Your Earning Potential: Make $1,000 a Month Writing Tweets with this 1 Formula IF All Above Are Filled Conditional Formatting
There is another crazy little bit of workaround that I wanted to avoid, which is you can just do equals time value and then highlight the whole column a cert- uh, the highlight n- thing you wanna do, and only highlight the time as white. But that's a bit of a workaround that I didn't really wanna do. I wanted to focus on just this p- correct custom formula , but you can do that in theory that other kind of way, which is highlight the entire column a certain color and then highlight it only if it's time value. But here, I thought this would be, I thought this would be super easy, but it wasn't. But that's how to highlight not time. You're watching Better Sheets here on YouTube.
