How To Center Text Across Rows and Columns
Learn how to center text across rows and columns in Google Sheets by merging cells and adjusting alignment for a cleaner, more organized table layout.
So you want to center your text across rows. In this case, we have a bunch of months. We're gonna insert a row above it, and we wanna w- write Q1, Q2 here. Now what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna click and drag my cursor so that I include, in one selection , all three of the cells that I want to center my text across. Then I'm gonna go click More here. I'm gonna find this icon that has two little arrows pointing to each other, and it's called Merge Cells . I can select different merge types, but all I really wanna do is merge this particular selection , so I'm n- not going to select any particular merge type, even though merge horizontally would work in this case. I'm just gonna click Merge Cells. And then I'm gonna do that for the next three as well, Merge Cells.
And I'm gonna do that for the next three. And the last one, I'm gonna show you a little trick. I can take the merged cells that I already have, copy, and select the very first cell of this exact range that I want to merge , and I can do Command + V or paste. And what that will do is actually paste that merged cell over all three. Be careful there, because it might do something you don't want it to do, or in this case, it's doing something I want it to do. And now, I'm gonna make sure that I have horizontal alignment center. I'm gonna do that across all of them, horizontal alignment center. And then what that's centering is across this particular cell, which now is three cells across. So Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4.
And now I've centered my text across this row, across three columns in this row. Let's say I wanna do that over here as well. I can copy and paste this, and I can call this sums or analysis . All with just merging and centering. If I wanna center hor- uh, not just horizontally, but vertically, I can select these and put them in the middle. And let's say I don't want the rep here. I actually wanna insert in the left, and I want all of these to be merged. So I can merge these cells . And then I wanna put rep here, but I want it sort of angled. So I can text rotate up, and then I can center and middle. And there, we also have- centered our text across all of these rows.
