How To Add Numbers Automatically in Google Sheets

Learn how to automatically add numbers in Google Sheets using the SUM function and create running totals for your sales data. This tutorial covers essential techniques to keep your data updated effortlessly.

Here's how to add numbers automatically in Google Sheets. We have a number of sales in this column and we want to add it up all the time. So, we could do a total sales here and we'll do equals sum. Sum is going to be all of the range we want to add up. The interesting thing about sum is it will only look at numbers. So, we can actually get even these words in and it'll be the exact same number . See, because it's just looking at numbers. So, we have a sum and that will automatically update if we add in October's numbers. Let's say we want to add up numbers sequentially or in order like we want to know how many sales did we have at the end of April. Well, that's going to be a little

different. We'll put a sum here and we're going to start at B2 colon B2. Now, what that's going to do if we just do that copy paste, copy paste. See, it's showing just each month. But we can do one more thing. Instead of just B2, we're going to add a dollar sign in front of the first two. So now when we copy paste this, you can notice B2 and B3. So automatically it's adding up each of the ones above it. So this gives us a running total of how many sales we have at the end of that month. So by the end of October we have 472 sales. If we add November here, maybe we went 34. See the

number automatically changes to a running total . And that's pretty cool, right? You're watching Better Sheets here on YouTube.
