Here's how to count cells with text. We're gonna do a few different things depending on what kind of text you wanna count. Maybe you just wanna count that there is some text, or you wanna count that it's text, not numbers, or you wanna count a specific type of text. In this case, we have a bunch of items that are going out to be shipped, and we have a status for each one, and we just wanna get a count of the status. But we wanna get a count of anything that has a status, because there's some numbers, one oh two, four oh four, not just text. That we're gonna use equals COUNTA, and we're going to select the range D2 colon D. That's this range right here that has all of the text we're actually counting. COUNTA, or like I like to call it, count all, it's just counting does it have something?

But if we wanna say, "Hey, this one oh two, four oh four, these are not appropriate answers , I just wanna know how many have text," we're gonna do equals COUNTIF , and we're gonna use the exact same range , D2 colon D, for this Status column. But we're going to have a criteria that is a wildcard , so we're putting in quotes the asterisks. And what that does is just say, "Hey, give me back any text." And there we go. That's sixteen because there's one, two, three, four numbers out of the twenty. But what if we wanna just say, "Give me the specific count of Shipped"? We're gonna do equals COUNTIF , again, the same range , D2 colon D, and the criterion is gonna be, in quotes, "Shipped." And that's three.

One, two, three. So I don't have to count how many are shipped. However, if we have some text here, like we wanna say, "Out for delivery," for this we have to type in "Out for delivery" again inside of our formula . However, I'm gonna show you a really quick way to not do that. So we'll say, "Hold at location." If we go to our formula and instead of the word Shipped, we put a reference to the cell of F5 here, where it says the word Shipped, we get the exact same answer. And now that reference is looking for F6 here, F7 here. So if we add hold at location, now that's two. Cool. But what if we also wanna say, "What if there's nothing?

What i- what is the count of the cell without text?" That's equals COUNTBLANK. And we have D2 colon D, and it's gonna be four. One- Two, three, four.
