How do you unmerge cells in Google Sheets?

Unmerge splits a merged block back into individual cells. Only the top-left cell keeps the displayed value; other cells become empty. Unmerge is the first fix when sort fails, filters break, or you need to paste data into what was one big title cell covering your table.

When to use it

Unmerge when inheriting templates with merged data rows, before converting a pretty report layout into a workable table, or when charts need a clean rectangular source range.

When to skip it

If the merge is intentional for a title-only row and data lives below in unmerged rows, leave title merge alone and fix only data section merges.

How it works

  1. 1

Click inside merged area, Format > Merge cells > Unmerge.

  2. 2

Recover lost cell values from version history if unmerge destroyed data you still need.

  3. 3

Re-enter or paste values into individual cells after unmerge before sorting.

  4. 4

Clear stray formatting if unmerge leaves uneven borders from old layout.

  5. 5

Reapply validation per cell after unmerge on former input blocks.

  6. 6

Document layout change for team so nobody re-merges out of habit.

Examples in Google Sheets

Fix sort on roster

Unmerge name columns, paste names from backup column, sort alphabetically for mail merge.

Chart source cleanup

Unmerge header block mistakenly including first data row so chart range is continuous.

Import prep

Unmerge all cells on tab copied from PDF table paste before running cleanup scripts.

Common mistakes

  • Unmerge without checking version history when only one value survived from many cells.
  • Assuming unmerge restores all previous values automatically (it does not).
  • Unmerge then sort while related columns still misaligned from old layout.
  • Leaving partial merges in middle of table still blocking filter.
  • Re-merging data rows after fix because title row looked lonely.
