What does merge cells do in Google Sheets?
Merge cells combines a rectangular selection into one display cell. Only the top-left cell value survives; others are discarded. Merged blocks suit dashboard titles and form-like layouts but break many data operations. Use merge sparingly on tables that sort, filter, or feed formulas.
When to use it
Use merge for report titles, banner rows, and printable cover sections where the sheet is presentation-first and not a living database table.
When to skip it
Skip merge on data tables, pivot sources, Form response tabs, and any range you sort or filter regularly. Alternating colors and center across selection often replace merge needs.
