How To Transpose In Google Sheets

Learn how to efficiently switch columns to rows in Google Sheets using the transpose function, and discover how to create dynamic matrices that automatically update when changes are made.

So you wanna switch your columns into rows. That's going to be the transpose function . So we have this text, name, email, number , and we wanna put it into a single row. So you don't have to just copy and paste each item, which could create a little bit of data malfunction, some data cleaning. Just do transpose. And transpose only takes a, an array or a range here. And it will just move it from a column to a row. But one of the coolest things you can do with transpose is create a matrix.

So with matrices, we need to have the exact same thing in the B column here as in row two. So we're, like, looking at the distance between these two places. And sometimes we want to edit something, like we wanna change Turn Data in Many Columns Into 1 Column , Your First Formula in Google Sheets , or VIBE CODE GOOGLE SHEETS . But we can use equals transpose and select this whole range . Make sure the formatting is the same. Look at that. We have an automatic editor here where we don't need to edit both LA's here and here. Just here, Los Angeles, and it's automatically updated.

I'm gonna show you a simple trick too, how to black out or change the color of all of these where it's the same. So, like, if we're doing a comparison or some kind of, like, managerial matrix here, we don't care about the distance between New York and New York. It's zero. So we can go to Format , Conditional formatting , change our format to Custom formula is equal to B2 is equal to C2. Wrap this with ROW and this with COLUMN. We want C3 to H. It's the range . And we need to do B3 and C3 because we're starting in the C3 place. So that where that row and that column are exactly the same.

There you go. We can black it out if we want to or add a nice shade of yellow or green. The exact same green as here. Pretty cool, right? Create a little matrix transpose is the way to go.
