What Makes a Great Google Sheet?
Before we dive into specific examples of great Google Sheets, let's find out what makes a spreadsheet great. A great Google Sheet should have the following characteristics:
  • Clean and Clear Design: A great Google Sheet should have a clean, easy-to-read design that highlights the most important information. Allows the user to find what they are looking for, or accomplish the task they came to the sheet to do.
  • Well Branded Design: A great design doesn't mean just adding ornamentation for the sake of it. It means that someone who uses your sheet knows it is an extension of your business, or community. They can tell you made it, it's for them, it's where they should be. A well branded designed sheet will make the spreadsheet experience seamless from your users other experiences with you.
  • Usability: A great Google Sheet should be easy to use and navigate. Users should be able to find the information they need quickly and easily. Navigation in complex sheets can be, well, complex. Make sure to think about what your user wants to do next, and where, and get them there.
  • Customization and Personalization: A great Google Sheet should be customizable to meet the specific needs of the user. In fact a personalized experience is important too. But this also can be related to communities. Does your user know this spreadsheet space is for them? If they can't tell, then you have some work to do. Not just that it's custom to a user, but that it's personalized and brings them joy!
  • Automation: A great Google Sheet should automate repetitive tasks to save time and increase efficiency. But not just timed and event based automations like triggers. There are simple faux-mations that you can create with Google Sheets Formulas. Formulas like IF() and ISBLANK() can be combined in wonderful ways.  These are formulas that create experiences that seem like automation.
